Isis GalleryLocation: City of Location: London/Hove Year founded: 2008 Address: Contact details: Website: isisgallery.org Indicative opening times: Current staff: Isis Gallery launched at a beautiful, central London Victorian workshop space in Spring 2008 with the first exhibition in the UK of the NY artist Ruth Marten (b. 1949 NYC), tattoo maven of the 80’s downtown scene and longtime artist of the marginal and the absurd. The following programme continued the NY theme with exhibitions by Alice O’Malley (b.1962, NYC - photographer and portraitist who is holding a torch previously held by Peter Hujar) and Antony, whose collages and photography extended his well known performance work (Antony and The Johnsons) to new territories. Since then, Isis has hosted solo and group shows whose contributors include internationally known artists such as Sarah Lucas, Derek Jarman, Hans de Wit (b. 1953 Eindhoven) and Martin Erik Andersen (b. 1964 Copenhagen). In addition, Isis has published editioned artwork, books and music, and collaborated with Japanese fashion house Comme des Garçons, revelling in the playground of opportunity. Currently enjoying a hiatus in keeping a permanent space open, Isis is now nomadic. Most recently in the Cloisters at Lincoln Cathedral with Martin Griffiths (b. 1955 Oxford), the next flowering will be in a large warehouse space in July, for Ragged Kingdom, the first major installation in London by the world renowned iconoclast Jamie Reid (b. 1947 Croydon) in nearly three decades. Onwards and Upwards! Note: Isis is curated and managed by John Marchant (b. 1966 London) who was right hand man to Nan Goldin for many years. Names above in bold indicate artists working with Isis on a permanent basis. Showing at Trajector:Confessions of a Radical Traditionalist Jamie Reid, Hans de Wit, Alice O’Malley, Martin Griffiths, Ruth Marten, Martin Erik Andersen. |
