Showing at Trajector:The Netherlands has a long history of international trading that saw its seafaring people travel to the most distant regions of the known globe in the spirit of commerce. Ironically, although this legendary ‘handelsgeest’ still sees many foreign ventures with other Dutch careers, Dutch contemporary artists have a something of a reputation for sticking close to home. And, who could blame them given the Netherlands’ traditionally nurturing conditions for the visual arts and artists. By contrast, ‘On the Road’ presents works by a handful of extremely different Dutch artists who have, in the tradition of those early adventurers, chosen to live and work outside of the Netherlands. Does the life of an artist living outside of his of her homeland have an impact on the art? That’s really up to the viewer to determine. ‘On the Road’ presents works by Jasmina Fekovic, Claire De Jong, Marcelle Hanselaar, Risk Hazekamp and Willem Weismann. |
