TORCHLocation: Amsterdam Year founded: 1984 Address: Contact details: Website: torchgallery.com Indicative opening times: TORCH gallery started in 1984 as one of the first galleries dedicated to contemporary photography in the Netherlands. Since then the gallery has focused on pioneering new types of media in art, ranging from staged photography to digital image editing and veejay art. The now matured gallery presents a wide spectrum of art, ranging from the photo-realist paintings by Terry Rodgers to the completely digital worlds by Eelco Brand. With a long history of international exhibitions at Art fairs such as the Armory show, Art Basel Miami Beach, Pulse Miami and Paris Photo, TORCH is able to provide an international springboard for talented artists. This approach has helped form the considerable successes of artists such as Loretta Lux and Anton Corbijn. It is hard to qualify what makes a typical TORCH artist. Their styles, media and artistic approaches all differ wildly. What they do have in common is a serious commitment to their profession and a refreshing perspective on our world. Some patterns do seem to appear when looking at the different catalogues. Themes like identity, sensuality, nature and the flight from reality are reoccurring, as is the occasional clash with the boundaries of good taste. TORCH continues to light the way for the artists of tomorrow. Showing at Trajector:TORCH presents new works by Martin C. de Waalat this year's Trajector Art fair. His reluctance to define his own identity as a constant results in him taking on many alter-egos. Sometimes he manifests himself as a die-hard Metal enthusiast, a high-fashion model or a Italo Disco dj. He plays with the stereotypes connected with subcultures and often introduces unexpected sexual undertones to his performance and installation pieces. These fantastical, hyperbolic displays of underground and alternative currents in society are in stark contrast to his recent photographs which are solemn portraits of his near family and 'real life'.
